Foreign Exchange & Currency

Q1. Will I get the same rate as the one I've seen on another foreign exchange website?
Ans. The exchange rates shown on other websites are usually 'mid rates' for interbank transactions over GBP 5,000,000. These rates are indicative rates, halfway between the buy rate and the sell rate. So you may not get the rate you've seen on another website when you make your foreign exchange transfer.

Q2. What's a spot transaction?
Ans. A spot transaction is a foreign exchange transfer where the exchange rate is set at the current market rate, even though the transfer is usually made two business days later. The spot value (or spot price) is the amount you'll receive when your transfer is made.

Q3. What's the foreign exchange market?
Ans. The foreign exchange market is made up of banks, companies and individuals trading in major financial centres like London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Banks and financial institutions are responsible for most of the market activity - with large speculative capital transactions aimed at securing the best investment returns.

Q4. When am I exposed to foreign exchange risk?
Ans. Your exposure to foreign exchange risk starts from the time you make a transfer to when you pay or receive money in a different currency. (It doesn't start at the time you make or receive the payment.) For example, if you agree to buy a property in the USA today based on an exchange rate of 1.85 (GBP/USD), if the rate moves to 1.76 by the time you buy the house, it will cost you 5% more in sterling to cover the purchase price in US dollars.

Q5. How soon can I make my foreign exchange transfer?
Ans. A foreign exchange transfer is usually made two business days after you request it. (This is called a 'spot settlement'.) Due to time zone differences, the earliest transfer date for most currencies is the next day, as long as we receive your request early in the day to give us enough time to arrange the transfer. Same day transfers are possible in some currencies, subject to transfer cut off times. It's common practice for banks to ask for sufficient funds on account before completing a foreign exchange transfer.

Q6. What happens if I change my mind after I've made a foreign exchange transfer?
Ans. When you book a deal you have committed to go through with it. If you do change your mind you will have to continue with the transaction and book another deal to change the currency back.
